It is possible to stop hair loss, but how fast you can achieve that would depend on the method you use, its appropriateness to the type of hair loss problem you have, and the severity of the problem. For more severe cases of hair loss, drastic measures, such as hair transplant, hair grafting, and scalp reduction, might be required, but for the less severe types and not brought about by uncontrollable factors, simply adjusting your lifestyle is enough to stop hair loss.
Try these measures to prevent the progression of hair loss:
1. Go green. Go organic in your choice of shampoo and hair products. Commercial shampoos smell great, but they contain chemical ingredients that can weaken the hair follicles. Choose shampoos that are naturally formulated with saw palmetto, olive oil, pearl powder, aloe vera or rosemary.
2. Avoid using a hair dryer. Allow your hair to dry naturally. Using a hair dryer too often damages your hair, making them more prone to breakage.
3. Avoid using a hair iron. Straightening your hair with a hair iron is never a good idea. The heat strips the hair of moisture and causes damage to the hair.
4. Stay out of the sun. Too much exposure to the sun can damage your hair as well. Apply a hair conditioner or better yet, wear a hat when going out.
5. Avoid getting chemical hair treatments of any kind. Hair salons use chemically-formulated solutions to give you a “new look”. Unfortunately, these solutions compromise the health of your hair. If you want to have your hair curled, use the traditional curlers instead. If you have the habit of dyeing or coloring your hair, give a gap of 2-3 months at the very least before having your hair dyed again.
6. Let down your hair. Tying your hair tightly with a pony tail or in a bun can ruin your beautiful locks. Prevent hair loss by letting your hair down.
7. Include saw palmetto in your diet. Saw palmetto is a plant that is thought to block the conversion of testosterone into dihydrosterone, a hormone that has been identified to be a major contributor to hair loss problems.
8. Eat protein-rich foods. Protein makes up the hair follicles, so embarking on a protein-rich diet helps to keep them nourished. Eggs, seafood, fish, yogurt, soy milk, tofu, and bean sprouts are good sources of proteins.
9. Have enough calcium in your diet, too. Calcium builds stronger hair follicles, so drinking milk or taking calcium supplements is deemed wise when hair loss is a problem.
10. Take vitamin supplements. Vitamin B-complex and Vitamin E are especially recommended. Biotin, a B-vitamin, has incredible hair strengthening properties that taking it on a regular basis can help prevent hair loss to some extent. Other B-vitamins, like Niacin and Folic acid, improve blood circulation to the scalp and facilitate the regrowth of hair. Meanwhile, the powerful moisturizing and antioxidant properties of Vitamin E are necessary in preventing hair loss.
11. Hydrate. Drinking lots of water every day keeps you healthy and prevents the onset of many health problems, hair loss among them.
12. Sleep. Not getting enough sleep compromises the health of your hair. Sleep no less than 7 hours every day to prevent hair loss.
If you cannot prevent or stop hair loss by making these lifestyle changes, then perhaps, it’s time to consider more drastic approaches.
